There are many different ways that one can go about designing and creating their own website. While there is no real defined set of rules or standards when it comes to web design, there are some methods that are more common, and there are some practices that are better accepted in the industry than others. And this is where the question arises, should you design a website according to scientific standards and rules or just make a good, visually-appealing website?
The answer to this question varies by case-to-case and from person to person. If you are designing a personal website for your own behalf, there is no need to stick to any set of rules or standards whatsoever. Just do whatever feels right, and whatever looks the best to you. Since it is your own personal website, you should have the freedom to do with it whatever you would like, and this includes the design. Of course, if you make something to obscure or abstract you may not attract many visitors ' and some people might even want it this way. Again, because it is your own website, the choice is completely up to you; nobody is going to tell you that it is right or wrong.
On the other hand, if you are creating or designing a website for a large company, or one that is going to be viewed by those who are working in a professional trade or industry, you might want to consider sticking to a set of scientific standards. Because these methods and practices have been well-researched, you already know that they will be effective at catching the attention of your website viewers ' after that it is only up to you to provide interesting and fresh content to keep those visitors coming back time and time again.
Of course, the method you use to build a website depends greatly on the exact organization or company that you are creating the website for. A local tattoo company or arena probably will not require a website that is designed to any set of standards whatsoever. If you are building a website for a local institution, or some kind of research or scientific company, however, there is probably a strict set of rules and guidelines that they will require you to stick to when designing and building their website. If you are working as a webmaster, or looking to get into the industry of web design, you should clear this up with a company beforehand. There is nothing worse than getting all set to start a job, only to realize you are not familiar with the standards and methods they want you to use.
Some companies will just let you loose on your own, however. This leaves it up to you to sink or swim, but this can really be a great way to prove your worth and knowledge to a company. Prove you can build a better site than what they already have, and you might just get in good.
